5 reasons to visit Trancoso on the Discovery Coast, Bahia, Brazil

You may have heard of the ‘Costa do Descobrimento’ the stretch of Atlantic coastline in the south of Bahia, where the Portuguese first ‘discovered’ Brazil in 1500. Today, the area is considered to be an important historical area and has no less than eight UNESCO protected areas, lush Atlantic rainforests, three national parks and indigenous reserves.

This stretch of coastline, which includes Porto Seguro, Arraial d’Ajuda, Caraiva, Santa Cruz Cabralia, Belmonte and Trancoso, is considered to be the most biodiverse in the entire world, making it of great interest to scientists and conservationists.  It is also often described as being ‘close to paradise’ by those who have visited, due to its unpretentious charm, spectacular lush greenery, rainforests and unspoiled palm fringed beaches. At the heart of the Discovery Coast, Porto Seguro is the main city with an international airport and the hub that connects all of the coastal regions including Trancoso.

Why do we single out Trancoso specifically?  The Bahia coastline is bursting with character, history, flora and fauna and stunning residences of all shapes and sizes, but Trancoso holds a special place in our hearts, as once you have visited, you will be hooked. Here are just some of the reasons we fell in love with Trancoso:

1.Bohemian atmosphere

Located around 38km (approx. 1 hours’ drive) from Porto Sequro, Trancoso is a laid-back village that has a distinctly bohemian air. Unspoiled and untouched by mass tourism, this natural chique beach location attracts its fair share of high-profile visitors, playing host to huge stars of music, film and modelling, including all the Brazilian celebrities and Beyonce, Kate Moss and Leonardo di Caprio.

If you are expecting to find a 5-star resort with all of the modern amenities associated with tourist hotspots, think again.  Of course, there are luxurious hotels, international restaurants and boutiques, but essential accommodation in Trancoso ranges from the colourful fishing and colonial cottages that have been converted into attractive guest houses (pousadas), bars and shops. Part of the charm is that there are no high rise buildings, which are forbidden.

Visitors who have already discovered and have become bewitched with its people and atmosphere, have identified this heavenly part of the Discovery Coast as the best location to source luxury beach homes for sale in Brazil.

2.Trancoso Quadrado

It would be correct to say, all roads lead to the Quadrado. This large patch of ground, rectangle or plaza surrounded by trees and colonial buildings is the historic heart of the village. Much more than a square or rectangle, day or night the Quadrado is the beating heart of Trancoso. Sat in one of the many bars, restaurants or whilst wandering round the shops or stalls, you could be forgiven for feeling that you have gone back in time.

The square is lined with colourful buildings that have not changed for centuries and there is the ancient eighteenth century church of São João Batista. At certain events, there is also a stage at the Praça São João, which is how the Quadrado is officially called, when religious and village festivals are held. In fact, the most modern aspect of the square is the existence of an improvised football field, where locals come together and play.

3. Trancoso Beaches

This stretch of Bahia is famed for its paradisical tropical beaches, and within the local vicinity of Trancoso you’ll find pink cliff, coral reefs, natural pools, palm fringed sands and crystal-clear water.  Each beach has a different vibe, some have stalls, bars and restaurants, others are perfect for watersports and some offer complete peace and tranquility as you marvel at the wonder of nature.  Our favourites are Praia do Espelho, Praia dos Coqueiros, Rio da Barra, Praia dos Nativos and Itapororoca.

4. Golf in Trancoso

Golf is much more than a sport it is a lifestyle that attracts dedicated players who enjoy both the health benefits and the social aspects and these requirements are met more than adequately in Trancoso.  The world-class Terravista golf course was designed by the highly acclaimed architect Dan Blankenship, providing 70 hectares of stunning undulating greens, lakes and tropical foliage.

Before construction of the course began, extensive historical research was undertaken which identified site of the course became the first prehistorical excavation site in Bahia, uncovering historical of the Tupiguarani and Aratu remains (under the position of holes 14 and 15).
