A bumpy road ride, 40 minutes south of Espelho and 1 hour and 20 minutes south of Trancoso will take you to the peninsula of Caraíva. To get there, one needs to take a canoe to cross the river, which meets the sea at the northern edge of this old fisherman´s village. There are no cars in Caraíva and tourists are taken to their pousadas by donkeys that cross the sandy roads from north to south and from east to west. When the sun sets and the night falls, Caraíva transforms from a sleepy village into a unique, lively world of it´s own. Bars and restaurants open and everywhere there is music as people dance and dine in the open air below the most beautiful starry sky you will ever see. If one were to describe Caraíva in one word, it would have to be “magic”.
